3-Day Samburu Safari from Nairobi | Special Five Kenya Safari

Explore Samburu on a 3-day safari from Nairobi with Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffes, gerenuk, elephants, lions, scenic landscapes and game drives.

Safari Overview

A 3-day Samburu safari from Nairobi takes you into a very different side of Kenya.

Far north of the capital, the landscape becomes drier and more rugged, with rocky hills, open plains, acacia woodland and the life-giving Ewaso Nyiro River running through the reserve.

This distinctive environment supports wildlife rarely encountered together in Kenya’s southern safari destinations, including Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich and gerenuk — often known collectively as the Samburu Special Five.

Over three days, you will have several opportunities to explore the reserve on game drives, search for its unique wildlife and experience the striking landscapes of northern Kenya.

With Horizon Explorer Africa Safaris, we can tailor your safari around your travel dates, accommodation preferences, budget and interests.

Your journey, your way.

Samburu for Wildlife Photographers

Samburu offers a distinctive photographic setting.

The combination of dry landscapes, warm light, riverine vegetation and unusual wildlife creates images that look very different from photographs taken in the wetter savannahs of the Maasai Mara.

Reticulated giraffes against dry hills, elephants near the Ewaso Nyiro River and gerenuk standing upright to browse are among the scenes photographers may encounter.

Wildlife behaviour and sightings vary, so patience is an important part of the experience.

Samburu and Conservation

Samburu is part of a broader northern Kenya conservation landscape where wildlife, local communities, tourism and livestock interact.

The region’s semi-arid environment makes water, grazing and habitat particularly important to both wildlife and people.

Traveling responsibly, respecting local communities and following wildlife-viewing guidelines helps support the long-term value of tourism in the region.

Follow the Ewaso Nyiro River through a dry landscape.

Samburu offers a safari experience with its own identity.

Follow the Ewaso Nyiro River through a dry landscape.

Watch elephants move between the river and the surrounding bush.

Search the plains for Grevy’s zebra and Beisa oryx.

Look carefully among the shrubs for a gerenuk standing upright to feed.

Then finish the day beneath the wide northern Kenyan sky.

Three days gives you enough time to experience this remarkable landscape without rushing through it.
