Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara provides a scenic introduction to Tanzania’s Northern Circuit.

Located along the Great Rift Valley, the park contains a mixture of woodland, open areas, groundwater forest and lake-associated habitats.

Families may encounter elephants, baboons, giraffes, buffalo, hippos and numerous bird species.

Lake Manyara is also known for tree-climbing lions, although sightings are not guaranteed.

Flamingos and other water-associated birds can be present depending on water levels and seasonal conditions.

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire introduces families to a very different landscape, characterized by large baobab trees, open woodland, grassland and seasonal rivers.

The park is particularly associated with elephants, and game drives can also produce sightings of giraffes, zebras, buffalo, antelopes, lions and a wide range of birds.

For children, Tarangire can be an excellent place to learn how wildlife responds to seasonal water availability.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area brings a dramatic change in scenery as the safari reaches the highlands.

The main wildlife experience is a game drive inside Ngorongoro Crater, a large volcanic caldera containing a variety of habitats and substantial wildlife populations.

Families may see lions, buffalo, zebras, wildebeest, hippos and other species. Black rhino sightings are possible but not guaranteed.

The crater also provides an opportunity for children to understand how geology, water and vegetation influence wildlife distribution.

Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park

The final major wildlife destination is the Serengeti, where vast open plains provide a classic East African safari setting.

Game drives may reveal lions, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hyenas and many other species.

If your family travels during the broader wildebeest migration period, wildlife movements can add another dimension to the experience. The migration follows rainfall, grazing and water availability, so its location varies throughout the year.
