4-Day Maasai Mara Safari from Nairobi | Kenya Safari

Experience a 4-day Maasai Mara safari from Nairobi with three nights in the Mara, Big Five wildlife, game drives, Great Migration opportunities and optional cultural experiences.

Safari Overview

Four Days in the Maasai Mara. More Time to Explore. More Time to Watch Wildlife.

A 4-day Maasai Mara safari from Nairobi gives you the time to experience the reserve without rushing from one game drive to the next. With three nights in the Mara, you can enjoy several game drives, explore different areas of the reserve and spend more time watching wildlife in its natural environment.

The Maasai Mara National Reserve is one of Kenya’s most renowned wildlife destinations and forms part of the wider Serengeti ecosystem. Its open grasslands support lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest and many other species.

From the dramatic scenery of the Great Rift Valley to early-morning game drives across the Mara plains, this safari combines wildlife, scenery and comfortable travel in one well-paced itinerary.

It is a good choice for first-time safari travelers, couples, honeymooners, families, photographers and wildlife enthusiasts who want more time in the Mara than a typical 2- or 3-day safari allows.

With Horizon Explorer Africa Safaris, your safari can be arranged around your travel dates, accommodation preference and interests.

4-Day Maasai Mara Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi – Maasai Mara

Your safari begins with a morning pick-up from your Nairobi hotel, residence or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).Leave Nairobi and travel through the changing landscapes of the Kenyan highlands towards the Great Rift Valley. Depending on your schedule, you can stop at a Rift Valley viewpoint for photographs before continuing towards Narok and the Maasai Mara. The drive takes approximately 5–6 hours, although actual travel time can vary with traffic, road conditions and stops along the way.Arrive at your lodge or tented camp in time for lunch and some time to settle in.Later in the afternoon, head out for your first game drive. As the afternoon cools, the Mara's wildlife becomes active across the grasslands. Your guide will look for current sightings and may adjust the route according to wildlife activity.Return to camp or lodge in the evening.Dinner and overnight in the Maasai Mara.

Day 2: Full-Day Maasai Mara Game Drive

Wake up early for breakfast before setting out on a full-day game drive.Early morning is an excellent time to be in the reserve. The temperatures are cooler, light is often better for photography, and predators may still be active after the night. With a packed picnic lunch, you can spend much of the day exploring the Mara rather than returning to your accommodation for lunch.Depending on wildlife movements and the season, you may encounter:Lions resting or hunting Elephants moving across the plains Cheetahs in open grassland Giraffes browsing on acacia Zebras and wildebeest Buffalo herds Hyenas and other scavengers A variety of antelope and bird speciesDuring the migration season, your guide can also monitor areas where wildebeest and zebra are moving through the reserve. If conditions and the day's route allow, you may visit the Mara River. However, wildlife concentrations and river-crossing activity vary, and dramatic crossings cannot be predicted in advance.Return to your lodge or camp in the evening.Dinner and overnight in the Maasai Mara.

Day 3: Explore the Maasai Mara

Today gives you another opportunity to explore the reserve at a more flexible pace.Start with an early morning game drive before returning for breakfast, or choose a full-day drive with a packed lunch depending on your preferred safari style.Having another full day in the Mara means your guide can explore areas you may not have visited on the previous day and respond to fresh wildlife sightings. The day can be particularly rewarding for photographers, families and travelers who prefer not to rush their safari.Optional ExperiencesYou can also add selected experiences to your itinerary, subject to availability:Hot Air Balloon Safari Take to the skies at sunrise for an aerial view of the Mara plains before returning for a bush breakfast. Balloon flights are weather dependent and normally require advance booking.Maasai Cultural Visit Visit a local Maasai community to learn about traditional homes, crafts, livestock, music and aspects of Maasai culture. This should be arranged as a genuine cultural experience rather than simply a photo stop.Return to your lodge or camp for dinner.Overnight in the Maasai Mara.

Day 4: Maasai Mara – Nairobi

Enjoy breakfast before beginning your journey back to Nairobi.Depending on your departure time, you can choose between:An early morning game drive followed by breakfast Breakfast followed by a direct departure to NairobiTravel back through Narok and the Great Rift Valley, with a possible stop along the way depending on your schedule.Arrive in Nairobi in the afternoon or early evening and transfer to your hotel, residence or JKIA.If you have a late international flight, we can help coordinate the timing to allow a comfortable connection.

Why Choose a 4-Day Maasai Mara Safari?

Four days gives you a better balance between travel and time in the reserve.

Instead of arriving, having one game drive and immediately heading back to Nairobi, you have three nights in the Maasai Mara and more opportunities to explore.

What makes this itinerary worthwhile?

  • Multiple morning and afternoon game drives
  • A full day available for wildlife exploration
  • More time to explore different areas of the reserve
  • Better opportunities for wildlife photography
  • Seasonal opportunities to experience the Great Migration
  • Time for optional cultural experiences
  • A more relaxed pace than a short weekend safari

Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, but spending more time in the reserve gives your guide greater flexibility to follow current sightings and choose routes according to conditions.

Your Safari Vehicle

For a private safari, travel is typically in a 4×4 safari Land Cruiser designed for Kenya’s wildlife areas and longer game drives.

Depending on the vehicle and package, features may include:

  • Pop-up roof for open-air wildlife viewing
  • Individual window-side seating
  • Comfortable safari seats
  • Charging points for cameras and phones
  • Bottled drinking water
  • Experienced professional driver-guide
  • Wi-Fi where mobile network coverage is available

Wi-Fi should not be expected throughout the safari, particularly in remote areas where mobile coverage can be limited.

Planning Your Maasai Mara Safari from Abroad

Planning a safari from another country can involve more than simply choosing a lodge.

Horizon Explorer Africa Safaris can help coordinate the main elements of your journey, including:

  • Airport pick-up and drop-off at JKIA
  • Nairobi hotel transfers
  • Safari accommodation
  • Private safari arrangements
  • Vehicle and driver-guide
  • Optional activities
  • Safari extensions
  • Multilingual guides on request
  • Connections with Kenya Coast or other safari destinations

If you are flying internationally, we can also structure the itinerary around your arrival and departure flights.

For travelers with limited time, the Maasai Mara can also be reached by scheduled or chartered flight from Wilson Airport, reducing the amount of time spent on the road.

Start Planning Your 4-Day Maasai Mara Safari

Four days gives you something a short safari cannot: time.

Time to follow wildlife rather than rush from one sighting to another. Time to explore different parts of the Mara. Time to enjoy quiet mornings on the savannah and watch the landscape change as the day unfolds.

Whether you are visiting Kenya for the first time, planning a honeymoon, traveling with family or simply want more time in the bush, Horizon Explorer Africa Safaris can build the itinerary around the experience you want.
