12 Days Kenya Safari: Samburu, Ol Pejeta, Aberdare & Maasai Mara

Explore Kenya in 12 days with Samburu, Ol Pejeta, Aberdare, Lake Nakuru and Maasai Mara. Enjoy unique wildlife, rhino conservation and Big Five safari experiences.

Safari Overview

This 12-day Kenya safari takes you from the dry landscapes of northern Kenya to the forested slopes of the Aberdare highlands and the open grasslands of the Maasai Mara. Along the way, you will experience some of Kenya’s most distinctive wildlife areas, including Samburu National Reserve, Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Aberdare National Park, Lake Nakuru National Park, and Maasai Mara National Reserve.

The route is particularly appealing to travelers who want more than the classic Maasai Mara safari. Samburu introduces a different ecosystem and wildlife found in northern Kenya, while Ol Pejeta adds a strong conservation element. Aberdare provides a change of scenery with cool mountain forests and lodge-based wildlife viewing before the safari continues to Lake Nakuru and the wildlife-rich plains of the Mara.

With several nights dedicated to wildlife viewing rather than rushing through destinations, this itinerary works well for first-time visitors, returning safari travelers, photographers, couples, families, and anyone looking for a more varied Kenya safari.

Best Time for This Kenya Safari

Kenya can be visited throughout the year, but wildlife conditions vary by season.

June to October is generally popular for dry-weather safari conditions and strong wildlife viewing, particularly in Maasai Mara.

July to October is also a popular period for travelers hoping to see the seasonal wildebeest migration in the Mara ecosystem, although exact wildlife movements depend on rainfall and grazing conditions.

January to March often provides good wildlife viewing with generally favorable conditions in many safari areas.

The best travel period ultimately depends on whether your priority is wildlife photography, migration, weather, lower visitor numbers or budget.

Safari Experience

This itinerary is best suited to travelers who want:

  • A combination of northern and southern Kenya
  • More than the standard Maasai Mara route
  • Unique wildlife species in Samburu
  • Rhino conservation experiences at Ol Pejeta
  • Highland scenery in Aberdare
  • Rift Valley landscapes around Lake Nakuru
  • Extended Big Five game viewing in Maasai Mara
  • A private and flexible safari experience

The result is a safari with considerable variety: dry northern plains, wildlife conservancies, mountain forests, Rift Valley scenery and open Mara grasslands.
