5-Day Kenya–Tanzania Safari from Nairobi

Maasai Mara & Serengeti Cross-Border Safari

Two iconic safari destinations. Two countries. Five days of unforgettable wildlife experiences.

This 5-day Kenya–Tanzania safari connects the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya with Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, creating a compact East African safari for travelers who want to experience two legendary wildlife landscapes in one journey.

Starting in Nairobi, the safari travels to the Maasai Mara for game drives across Kenya’s famous savannahs before continuing toward the Kenya–Tanzania border and into the Serengeti.

The Serengeti then provides a completely different sense of scale, with vast open plains, seasonal wildlife movements and habitats supporting large populations of predators and herbivores.

The safari ends in Arusha, making it possible to continue your Tanzania journey to Ngorongoro, Tarangire or Zanzibar.

With only five days available, this is a relatively fast-paced itinerary. Travelers who want more time in both reserves can extend the trip to six, seven or more days.

MAASAI MARA AND SERENGETI: WHAT'S DIFFERENT?

Although the Maasai Mara and Serengeti are part of the same larger ecosystem, the experience in each destination has its own character.

Maasai Mara

The Mara is known for its rolling grasslands, abundant plains wildlife and excellent predator habitat. During the migration season, large herds of wildebeest and zebra enter the Mara from the Serengeti.

Serengeti

The Serengeti covers a much larger landscape and offers extensive open plains as well as woodland, kopjes and other habitats.

Wildlife distribution changes throughout the year, which is why the best area to explore depends heavily on your travel dates.

Together, the two destinations provide a broader view of the East African savannah ecosystem.

THE GREAT MIGRATION

The Maasai Mara and Serengeti are central to the annual wildebeest and zebra migration.

The herds move through the ecosystem in response to rainfall, fresh grazing and water availability. The timing is therefore not fixed.

Broadly:

January–March: Southern Serengeti and Ndutu areas can be important for calving.

April–June: Herd movements can shift through central and western Serengeti.

July–October: Northern Serengeti and Maasai Mara can become important migration areas, including possible river-crossing activity.

November–December: Herds generally move back toward the southern Serengeti.

These are broad seasonal patterns, not fixed dates. River crossings are natural events and can happen without warning—or not occur at a particular viewing location while you are there.

CROSSING FROM KENYA INTO TANZANIA

This safari involves international border travel.

Travelers should ensure that their passports, visas or applicable entry permissions meet the current requirements of both Kenya and Tanzania.

Border procedures can change, so requirements should be checked before departure.

Our safari team can assist with the practical logistics of the crossing, while immigration and entry decisions remain the responsibility of the relevant authorities.
